Why we Love it Wednesday: AmLactin

Jul 25, 2012

I initially bought AmLactin for my keratosis pilaris (an annoying skin condition). My dermatologist had recommended that I try it, and while I hated spending $$$ on a bottle of lotion, I didn't want to spend another summer self conscious about the tiny bumps on my legs and arms. AmLactin contains alpha-hydroxy acids which exfoliate and emollients which moisturize the skin. The lotion is said to remove dead skin cells as well as helping skin retain moisture.

Always a bargain hunter, I found a 20 oz bottle for $17.99 at Costco, and had a $3 off coupon. Score!

I started using the lotion once a day initially and after making sure that it didn't irritate my skin, I increased application to twice daily. I have noticed a real improvement. For the treatment of keratosis pilaris alone, AmLactin is worth the price.

But it gets better!

One evening I had a little extra on my hands and didn't want to waste it so I rubbed it on my heels. The next morning I noticed a change. My cracked heels, caused by a firm commitment to flip flops, were so much smoother. I could still feel some cracks, but they weren't visible. I have used too many different products to count in order to smooth and heal the rough patches and cracked skin. Creams, lotions, oils, pumice stones, etc. I've applied in the morning and at night with my "lotion socks". Nothing has worked in the past. Who would have thought that an unintentional application of AmLactin would change all of that. Within a week, I was unable to feel the cracks. No work, no hot sweaty lotion socks, no multiple bottles of lotions...just using the leftover lotion on my hands solved my problem.

A couple of days later I was filing my nails and noticed that my hands were so soft and smooth. With a baby in the house I am constantly washing my hands which leaves them extremely dry. The flaky patches between my fingers were gone. My hands looked like someone else's. Again, just the residual lotion on my hands from applying to other ares of my body. I now make a point to use a little extra on my hands and feet.

If you have extremely dry skin, cracked heels, or keratosis pilaris, I highly recommend AmLactin. HIGHLY recommend!

Why We Love it Wednesday and a GIVEAWAY!! CLOSED

May 9, 2012

****THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED*****************

The Princess is at that stage where make believe and Princess fairy tales are the main reasons to get up in the morning. When we are in full fantasy mode she calls me Queen Momma, so I am totally supportive of it. Unicorns and fairies are also discussed pretty frequently. While I encourage her imagination...I am so happy that she finds rainbows and butterflies magical too. I love watching her get so excited about science and nature. She recently celebrated her 4th birthday and received the Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden. It was one of her very favorite gifts and won my vote as well. You can see it here.

The Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden comes with a butterfly habitat, a dropper to feed the butterflies, and a coupon to send away for your caterpillars. 4 year olds aren't known for their patience, so the caterpillars had been ordered prior to the big day. Our container contained 5 live larvae.

All of the nutrients the caterpillars need are inside the plastic cup, so all you are required to do is keep it safe from your little scientist. The caterpillars grow daily and by the end of the week were chubby and ready to form their cocoons.

At this point the cocoons are transferred into the habitat and seven days later they began emerging from their cocoons one by one.

It was so fascinating how they all began and finished their transformations at roughly the same time. Caring for the butterflies was very simple and only required sugar water and orange slices.

Because the weather was rainy and chilly for several days we chose to keep observing them until the temperature was above 55 degrees. The Princess wasn't too excited about releasing them because she felt that they were her pets, but once I explained that it was necessary in order for them to be happy and healthy she was on board. They flew out one by one and then hung around the front yard for quite some time.

Have your camera ready because you can get really close to them while they are adjusting to their environment.

I highly recommend the Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden. The Princess loved it and is ready for more caterpillars. The experience was awesome and she learned so much (me too!).

Vicki from Obsession with Butterflies wants everyone to have a chance to learn more about butterflies and has agreed to give one free Insect Lore Butterfly Garden to a reader!!! Her website is beautiful and has so much information about butterflies. Make sure to check out the jewelry also. The butterfly wing pendants are so pretty and different. Also, I had a question about our butterflies, and she was so helpful and responded almost immediately. Make sure to visit her site here.

For your chance to win your own habitat, tell us who in your house would be the most excited to watch the butterfly's transformation. For us, I would say it was a tie.

Giveaway open to residents of the US only.  Deadline for entry is Friday at 5:00 pm CST.  Winner will be announced Saturday morning on the blog.  Winner to be chose by that crazy radomizer thing!   Be sure to leave your email address in the comments so we know how to get in touch with you.  Good Luck!!

Why we love it Wednesday: Chobani!

Apr 19, 2012

Have you discovered this stuff yet?  I know I am late to the Greek Yogurt party.  My sister in law has been eating it for years I think.  But, better late than never.  Yummy is all I have to say.  And no fat.  And 14 grams of protein.  Great for breakfast.  Great for a snack.  I eat this almost everyday.  Blueberry is my favorite.  Followed closely by strawberry.  This is also great in dips.   Here are a couple of new ways that I have been enjoying my favorite snack.

Vegetable Dip

Mix 2 plain Chobani Yogurts with a package of Hidden Valley Ranch Dip seasoning packet.  Enjoy with carrots, green peppers, celery, etc.  Really good.  This has really helped me get my veggies.  I really liked it, but the kids preferred the "real ranch".

Peanut Butter Dip

Mix 1 Vanilla Chobani Yogurt with 1/2 cup peanut butter and a dash of cinnamon.  I actually ended up adding a little bit of honey too.  I served this with apples for the kids afternoon snack and they loved it.  A winner all around here.

If you haven't tried it, go out there and get some!  If you already love it, make sure you are buying it at Costco, it is at least $0.20 cheaper a container.

Why We Love it Wednesday: Popcorn Awesomeness

Apr 4, 2012

For my first "Why we love it Wednesday" post, I wanted to review a really cool item. Something that would force you to drop what you're doing and rush right out to buy it. I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to come up with a product that I love. That I just really couldn't do without. I looked around my house and saw tons of items that make my kids lives better, but I wanted this to be all about ME! Me, me, me!
I went to the kitchen and there it was, just sitting there all innocent like. Pretending that it wasn't aware of its awesomeness. But I know...and now you will too.

Introducing, The Nordic Ware Microwave Popcorn Popper. It is one of my favorite products and is by FAR the best $8.99 I ever spent.

My two favorite foods are apples and popcorn. I eat both every day and would be more than happy if forced to live solely on these two yummies (maybe a piece of peanut butter toast every now and then...). Last year when I started reading reports of how harmful the coating inside microwave popcorn bags could be, I was pregnant and became worried and immediately stopped eating my favorite snack. I had always eaten the low fat variety of the microwaved good stuff, and though my husband loves stove top popcorn, I wasn't willing to eat something so full of oil. I searched the Internet for an answer and found several posts on making popcorn in a brown paper bag. I tried this several times, and it was ok, but the popcorn wasn't fluffy and I wasted a lot of kernels that didn't pop. I bought a Sunbeam air popper, and it was a waste. A big, loud, messy waste.

One day I was at Target (where all good things happen), buying ranch flavored popcorn seasoning to make homemade ranch "Doritos," and spotted a yellow bowl on the top shelf. I thought it was ridiculous to spend $8.99 on a bowl to serve popcorn in. I'm pretty sure I rolled my eyes. I do that sometimes. So I took it off the shelf to scoff at it and saw that it claimed to pop popcorn in my microwave with or without oil! For $8.99? Bargain! My opinions can change quickly...

That night I made my first bowl, and fell in love. Its so simple. A half a cup of kernels into the bowl, into the microwave, and done. There is the option to use oil, but I haven't. I bought my mother one and she does use the oil and says that it is very good. After the popcorn is done (mine is perfect after 2 minutes and 30 seconds but every microwave is different) I spray it with butter spray and sprinkle a variety of popcorn seasonings. Perfect, perfect, perfect. For a quick snack, it's a great option because popcorn is healthy and because you can decide how much you want to make for easy portion control.

Buy one...you'll like it.

*Please note that these opinions are solely my own and I was not compensated in any way to provide them.  Now go buy a popcorn bowl!

Why we love it Wednesday and a Giveaway!

************The Giveaway is Now Closed********************************

The first feature that we would like to introduce you to is called, Why We Love it Wednesday.

I don’t know about you, but when I am out shopping for a specific item, the variety of choices can be overwhelming. I will look and look and look and then look at another store. I compare prices, colors, features, etc. because I don’t want to buy it and hate it. There are few things worse to me than wasting money. Seriously, I am way to cheap frugal to buy something and hate it and then just stick it in a cabinet and never use it.

So I am constantly looking for advice … and dispensing advice. If I have tried something and love it, you can bet you are going to hear about it. So this feature is dedicated to giving you our honest opinions about new things we have tried.

First up, running socks.

A few months ago, I didn’t really even realize that running socks existed.. I mean, I knew there were socks for running, but I didn’t really think they were any different than any other socks, just more expensive maybe. Boy was I wrong. Enter the local running store salesman.

I take off my shoes so he can do all the crazy measuring of my feet and then he goes over to a bin to grab a pair of socks. I immediately protest – “No, no “ I say. “I would rather try them on in these socks as these are what I wear to run in”. And then it happened. He laughed. Out loud. “Really, those are what you run in?” I was currently wearing a pair of regular socks, they were cute, they had polka dots on them, and I got them on sale at Kohls for less than a $1 a pair. They were also very thin and made of cotton. (Which I later learn, is rotten). “Do me a favor” he says “Just try the shoes on with these. There’s no pressure, you don’t have to buy them.” Alright, alright, I really don’t like to argue, so I gave in.

You know where this is going, right? I fell in love. I mean really really really fell in love. He had me try on the Drymax Running No Show Tab Socks. They are nothing but wonderful. They are a padded running sock that serve a whole host of purposes. First, never once have I taken them off and have had the socks feel like they are wet. This is apparently because they are NOT made of cotton. "Cotton is rotten", the salesmen informed me. Cotton absorbs all the moisture and keeps your feet wet. Which is well, gross. Drymax socks are equipped with a dual layer moisture removal system – which is fancy for my feet don’t feel wet when I run. Even when I run in the rain. My second favorite feature is how these socks fit. They hug my feet. They feel like they were made for my feet. The fit is perfect. And no blisters. Since I started running, I have been having trouble with blisters on the sides of my big toes. But no more. They have completely disappeared since wearing these socks. The hubby’s favorite feature is that my feet no longer stink after a run. Yes, you heard it here first, I have smelly feet. It has been a problem since I was a kid. Totally embarrassing, right? Well my friends, Drymax has taken care of this problem too. According to the Drymax website, “The MicroZap® antimicrobial in the Drymax® Fibers is a silver - zirconium phosphate ceramic ion-exchange resin. It fights odor-causing bacteria, helping keep socks odor free.” Fancy for, my feet don’t stink!! Everybody loves that.

I love these socks so much, that I think everyone should have a pair. I mean everyone. Not a runner? No problem, these are great just for working out.  The fabulous people at Drymax have kindly offered to give us a pair of their great socks to giveaway!!!! How wonderful is that?

You can receive two entries into this contest.  First, leave a comment on the blog about your current sock situation. Do you wear special running socks? Ever tried Drymax? We’d love to hear your stories. Second, become a follower.  Just hit the 'Become a Follower' button.  Once you are a follower, come back and leave us another comment saying you signed up.  Giveaway will close Friday at 5:00 PM CST.  #1 (my oldest child ;) will pick the winner from a hat draw Friday night and I'll announce the winner on the blog Saturday morning.  Good Luck!!!

And if you don’t win the giveaway, you can find these socks at local running stores and on-line. The Drymax Website has a store locater to make shopping easy.

*Please know that these opinions are mine and mine alone.  I have been using Drymax socks for months now.  I have not been compensated in any way to rave about how great this product is!  Drymax has been kind enough to provide the pair of socks to the winner.
